A monolithic locally sourced slate wall leads you into the building and defines the character of Sunstone. An array of cleverly positioned split level external terraces situated around the home follow the daily path of the sun, maximising the opportunities for outside living.

The clients aspiration was to explore an architecturally driven approach to ‘high-end’ coastal living with an emphasis on achieving a house designed both for the needs of a beach user and entertaining guests and family alike. The building’s form, along with the position of window openings, was carefully considered in order to frame the key views and remove the presence of any neighbouring properties, achieving a sense of both openness and privacy.

By placing the living spaces on the first floor, the property takes full advantage of its elevated position and features a dramatic entertainment space that runs the full length of the building. With a breakfast, lunchtime and evening terrace, the house is arranged to follow the path of the sun and delivers multiple opportunities for the 180-degree views to be enjoyed. The house also contains a spa area with changing rooms and showers to provide that element of luxury when returning home from a hard days surfing.

The building is rooted within its traditional Cornish surroundings through the use of natural materials such as slate and timber. The slate wall is made up of locally sourced stone and was skilfully laid to form the appearance of a dry stone wall and reflects the quality of finish and architectural detailing throughout the building, both internally and externally.

“Michael’s design skills, attention to detail and commitment to quality can be clearly seen in the end result at Sunstone. By installing a great team ethos and managing the project smoothly throughout it was a pleasurable process to be part of. Throw in the fact that I am a family member makes it all even more remarkable!.”
